Perhaps you’ve already noticed it: the “Elephant Trunk®,” a unique succulent that has enriched the succulent assortment this spring. This plant is the result of an innovative crossbreeding between various Cotyledon species by Amigo Plant, who is also the breeder. The unique shape of the leaf, which very much resembles an elephant’s trunk, makes the “Elephant Trunk®” a true eye-catcher.
It is always exciting to see and follow whether the ornamental value of a novelty is truly recognized by florists, garden centers, DIY stores, and home furnishing stores. That’s why this novelty went with Javado UK to the HTA National Plant Show in Stoneleigh, England, last week. During the competition for the most unique novelty in the Cacti & Succulents category, the “Elephant Trunk®” was awarded first prize and thus a gold medal, which says a lot about the ornamental value of this newcomer.
The jury for the novelty competition, locally called the ‘New Plant Awards,’ consisted this year of Cath Quinney, Josh Egan-Wyer, Emma Allen, Michael Perry, and Andy Bunker, accompanied by Martin Simmons and Pippa Greenwood from the HTA.
For a succulent like this Cotyledon ‘Elephant Trunk,’ the summer period is, of course, a fantastic time to offer this beauty to your customers. You have something unique to offer, and with leaves shaped like an elephant’s trunk, everyone can imagine themselves in the rich flora of South Africa, the region where the “Elephant Trunk®” originates.
