Aglaonema, a beauty in the shadow

Aglaonema is a tropical plant that originally grows in the humid jungles of East Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Aglaonema belongs to the Araceae family, just like the more well-known Dieffenbachia, Monstera, and Anthurium. For a long time, there weren’t many different Aglaonema varieties, maybe around 50… but in recent years, we have seen the range become increasingly colorful.

In terms of ornamental value, it’s really all about the foliage with Aglaonema. The oval-shaped leaves of this green houseplant are beautiful to look at, thanks to a decorative spotted pattern. Each leaf displays a unique motif of spots or stripes: green with silvery gray and white, but also green with pink-red. It’s not surprising that we are seeing this houseplant, which is also easy to care for, more and more often at florists, garden centers, DIY stores, and home furnishing stores.

Aglaonema is one of the strongest houseplants around. It does well in a location with less light or even a dark spot in the house without losing its beautiful leaf colors. It also thrives in offices, waiting rooms, or bathrooms. In the last mentioned location, it will definitely be happy, as a higher humidity level is beneficial for Aglaonema. Water sparingly, once a week is sufficient, and definitely do not let water stand in the pot.

If a customer in your store asks for an easy-to-maintain plant that is also suitable for dark spaces, Aglaonema is an excellent choice with great ornamental value, even for plant lovers without a green thumb. For a beautiful collection, check out Kwekerij Ansu in Wateringen, truly very beautiful!
