Early Aug is the period when the colorful Dahlia assortment enriches the cut flower assortment again for a few months, a beautiful seasonal flower if you ask us.
Perhaps you’ve already seen the first Dahlias, if not, it shouldn’t take too long… because the Dahlia really makes your flower arrangements truly summery!
We have to go back to 1804, the year when the Dahlia was first introduced in Mexico. The Dahlia is the national flower of Mexico and symbolizes pride and femininity. Interestingly, the Dahlia was already beloved during the time of the Aztecs. They used the plant not only for medicinal purposes but also tried to use the whole plant as food, which, however, was not successful. Fortunately, the tubers containing inulin, a valuable starchy substance, did make it to the menu and are still used today in the preparation of certain chemicals and medication to stabilize the blood sugar levels of diabetes patients.
We know that the Dahlia is not the most durable flower and that we need to give this summer bloomer some extra care to let the customers of your store enjoy it for as long as possible. And that actually starts with the grower who will harvest with a sharp knife… preferably in the morning or evening, as this keeps the Dahlia in the best condition. The harvest stage is very important; the flower of the Dahlia must already be open for good bloom in the vase.
Within the Dahlia assortment, we know different flower types, each with their own appearance and decorative value, perhaps some varieties come to mind when we mention, for example:
– Single-flowered,
– Fimbriata,
– Cactus,
– Pompon,
– Decorative
– Ball
– Waterlily
If you want to give your customer a few important and useful tips when purchasing the colorful Dahlias, you can share the following:
– Fill the vase well with lukewarm water
– Mix a few drops of chlorine with the water in the vase
– Remove the leaves from the Dahlia to prevent them from entering the water of the vase
– Place the Dahlias in the vase not in full sun and avoid drafts
– Refresh the water in the vase regularly
Are you or perhaps one of your customers a fan of the Dahlia? Then you can enjoy a beautiful Dahlia collection during the Holland Dahlia Event, which will take place on the weekend of Sep 6-8 at Landgoed Kasteel Keukenhof in Lisse. You can see them in all forms: in the garden, as flowers, arranged in an arrangement by students from the VONK-Bloem, Groen & Styling program… and more!
